Description:

Folic acid must be converted to its active forms to be used by the body. This is a multi-step biochemical process that occurs in the intestines and liver. In the presence of intestinal or liver dysfunction this conversion may not occur sufficiently enough to meet the body's needs. Furthermore, up to 60-percent of the U.S. population may have a genetic enzyme defect that makes it difficult for them to convert folic acid into active 5-MTHF. For these individuals and many others, 5-MTHF supplementation may be a more effective method of folate repletion. 5-MTHF is an essential cofactor in the metabolism of the amino acid metabolite homocysteine. 5-MTHF also must be present in sufficient quantity for normal production of the neurotransmitters serotonin, melatonin, dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. These functions make 5-MTHF critical for both cardiovascular function and mood support.

5Relieved nausea from taking methotrexate  May 01, 2012
By Roxy Lee
I have an autoimmune condition for which I must take methotrexate. A common methotrexate side effect is nausea. My doctor had given me a folic acid prescription, but the rx version did nothing for my horrible nausea. Fortunately I came across an article explaining that the 5-MTHF form can be better absorbed by some people. I substituted the 5-MTHF for the plain folate, and the nausea disappeared! I am so thankful this is available through Amazon.

My doctor had prescribed 1 mg. of folic acid, but I read that some doctors recommend taking a single 5 mg. dose the day following a once-a-week dose of methotrexate. After starting with the 5 mg. version, I switched to the Thorne 1 mg. version of 5-MTHF, as I find it easier to take it daily.

Check with your doctor if you're interested in trying this for methotrexate-related nausea. (Apparently folate supplementation is not OK for people taking methotrexate for cancer therapy, unfortunately.)

My doctor recommended this product to me. I ordered it and I've been taking it for about three weeks. I can feel a difference. That's all I need. I like feeling well.
