Works well for mild seasonal allergies May 12, 2007
By J. Thom I take this 2 times a day and it seems to control my spring time allergies quite well. I can't believe how much it helps me; if I forget to take it, I start sneezing, take the capsule, and I'm feeling better soon. My husband's allergies are worse, but he still gets some relief from this herb. We have a friend who gets relief from hives with Butterbur. Check with your dr.; mine says it's safe to use. I will continue to use this product and highly recommend it! This herb tastes a little strong; take with food and water.

Butterbur for year round "seasonal" allergies Mar 20, 2010
By Edward Ronningen I didn't have allergies when I was a kid. However, I started having trouble with seasonal allergies starting about a decade ago. They have progressively gotten worse, and for the last couple years (maybe due to the area we now live) I have had varying degrees of discomfort on a year round basis. I have tried various homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, and a variety of different medicines. Zyrtec has been the pill of choice for some time, but I never feel 100% when I'm on it. Consistently I have headaches, serious red eye, and sinus trouble even when taking the tablets twice a day.
About a month ago I came across some articles about Butterbur for the relief of allergy symptoms. Several studies and articles suggested that many patients in their trials, especially those who suffer from grass allergies, found a similar or higher level of relief with the Butterbur compared to other leading allergy medicines. I figured it was worth a shot, and the monthly cost is lower than what I have been spending on medicines.
I'm pleased to say that, for me, Butterbur has done a far superior job at curbing my allergy symptoms. The articles I read suggest that you not be on allergy medicines and Butterbur at the same time, so I took a chance and quit the Zyrtec cold turkey. The relief was noticeable on day one. The drowsiness is gone, I'm sleeping better, the red eye has essentially disappeared, and my sinuses have been clear on all but a couple days this month. There have been two days this month that the symptoms have come back (still not to the same level as what I would say was my "norm" on Zyrtec), and both days were when I went on a bike ride through a route that is beautiful but notoriously causes my allergies to spike. Typically it takes a couple days to get back to my baseline after these rides. This time, the symptoms disappeared within a few hours.
This is a welcome relief. It has been at least 5-6 years since I have consistently felt this good. Do your homework though, and make sure you find a reputable provider if you are going to try this stuff. There are some naturally occurring things in Butterbur that can be toxic to your liver, and I read some articles that suggest that people with liver or kidney problems might want to stay away.

I had stopped taking the butterbur. My migraines came back and my asthma started acting up. I started taking it again. I feel so much better. Don't miss those migraines!

Butterbur for allergy relief May 24, 2007

I started taking Butterbur several months ago after learning that it may help to relieve allergy symptoms. While I can't say with 100% certainty that it is solely responsible for my relief (maybe simply seasonal) I have been relatively symptom-free for the last several months. It took sometime to start working, but I will continue to take it for as long as I feel I am realizing some relief from it.

By K. Coleman If you suffer from seasonal allergies, and don't like the drowsy feeling from over the counter medicine, this is a great alternative!!
