fishy smell Dec 29, 2010
By anonymous I buy these Areds study vitamins/minerals by B&L because I am extremely nearsighted and I hope they will keep my retina healthy. I suppose whatever pharmaceutical company owns B&L paid for the Areds 1 and ongoing Areds 2 study. Anyway, I do hope they contain what they say. Aside from that, the Areds 2 pills are somewhat large and directions say take 4 a day. As soon as you open the bottle, the fish smell is loud. Like I imagine a tin of sardines smells. They use fish oil for the Omega fatty acid. I have taken Omega acids from fish by, for example, Country Life, and they didn't really smell fishy. I wonder if B&L uses high quality fish oil or as cheap as they can get? I am continuing to take them and hope I don't begin to smell like sardines. They also have plenty of articial dyes in them - "FDA approved" this and that. These dyes are unnecessary and should not be added by pill manufacturers. I think next time, I will read the Areds studies and buy the vitamins and minerals separately from a respected company. That is what I would advise to do. I have used Country Life brand for many years and they seem to use high quality ingredients and nothing unnecessary or harmful.

Old school formula, Maxivision was recoomended over this Sep 26, 2011

My eye doctor at UCLA recommended Maxivision, apparently its a better formula and newer ingredients. I stopped taking this and started Maxivision. I rather take care of my eyes now than wait and spend more trying to fix them.

In theory may be helpful. Apr 24, 2011

The various ingredients in this tablets may be helpful if you have MD. Certainly they should do no harm. Apparently some people were choking on the large gel-caps and the product was to be reformulated. The Vit A (beta carotene) was removed because of the association with a possible increased risk of lung cancer. The results of the study recommending these supplements was moderately positive. The results of a follow up study is apparently not published. B&L is presently advertising this product in some eye journals, perhaps a bit quick. Personally I have taken the preparation, as perhaps it is beneficial in slowing the progression of moderate to severe macular degeneration and certainly it has no major side effects. I would recommend the product.

By vegas1026 I have Macular Degeneration, my Retinal Specialist prescribed this eye vitamin. He said it was the best new medication for my condition on the market. And has had some great results. I take two capsules everyday day.

Smell Jan 30, 2012
By DME The horrible fishy smell of PreserVision AREDS 2 is new; the bottle I bought last week has an awful stench that sticks to my hands. But my last bottle, purchased in December, and bottles purchased prior to that time, smelled fine. So I can only assume that they have cheapened the ingredients to save money. I'll be asking my doctor for an alternative.
