1Ni-Cd battery designed to fail in essence  Nov 21, 2011
By fulluey
As faithful Sonicare users, we have went through 4 sets in the past 5 years. But we always wondered why it failed right after warranty (2 yrs). The instruction mentioned battery recycling. We didn't bother with it before until tonight I pried one dead unit up.

To my surprise, it is using old fashioned Ni-Cd battery in its sealed compartment. As we know, Ni-Cd is highly toxic. It needs to be recycled properly. That is probably why the manual has to state that recycling step. The worst thing is even after breaking the handle, I couldn't take out the battery without un-soldering the circuit board and pull the battery out of the epoxy glue. :(

Ni-Cd also are known for memory effect (need to deplete charge before recharging), low capacity (1200mh max vs 2500mh for Ni-MH), and less recharging cycles (250 vs. 1000). The battery is almost guaranteed to die, even though the unit is still in a good shape with lots of nice copper coils around. I bet if it is thrown with two $1 Ni-MH battery, the handle should at least last for more than 5 years. And if the design allow battery replacement, the handle could last forever.

I am more and more convinced that Philips designed the handle for maximizing profit in every 2yrs, rather than considering consumer and environmental impact. The brush head is already pricy. Why rip off consumer again every 2 years and dumping un-removable toxic battery to the landfill? What a shame this company is.

5Sonicare is amazing,,, as always  Jan 17, 2011
By lbg
I was already familiar with the Sonicare Elite and have owned and used it or the Essence for over 5 years. This was a wonderful purchase as a gift for a family of 4 that live on an island and do not have Sonicare readily available, not to mention reliable shipping - so the great price for 2 full brush sets was great for us this Christmas! They report they love the Sonicare as much as my husband and I do. The Essence line is the way to go, according to both of us, as the newer FlexCare gave my husband much trouble and gave completely out within 1 year (please note we travel heavily using these; I think the FlexCare just isn't as hearty as the Elite / Essence). Wonderful brushes overall though!

5Better than Oral B!  May 04, 2011
By noleqt
I don't leave reviews often, but I just had to rave about the Sonicare Essence! First off, when our Oral B Sonic Complete gave out after 3 years I did a ton of research about which electric toothbrush to get to replace it. I decided on this one because of the reviews and the fact that it came with 2 handles AND 2 chargers. Our Oral B had 1 handle so we had to take turns and switch heads, etc...big pain! I mostly used a manual because of it.
I was ecstatic to get my own! yay! The Sonicare feels soooo much better too. It covers more area and the design of the brush (curved bristles) really gets between teeth. After just one use I felt a HUGE difference in my teeth. They felt slick and clean just like a professional cleaning at the dentist. I love the timer too! I only wish it had a 5th segment for tongue cleaning, but I just turn it on again- no problem. Don't hesitate to get this- you won't regret it!

4Best of the Essence Series, Great Value  Sep 14, 2011
By Auton
I bought this to replace the Sonicare Elite I have been using for over 5 years. I loved the Elite and was looking for an economical repalcement. One requirement I had was the quadpacer fearute that was present on the old elite series. I also wanted two handles, as I expect my wife's Elite to reach end of life soon as well. This item was the least expensive way I found to meet those needs. These handles do not seem to be as nice as the old elite series units. They don't have all the adjustments and features of the elite, but they do have the important quad pacer. One feature that the new essence has is lithiun ion batteries, compared to the old ni-cads in the elite. I am hopefull that these will last longer and avoid the nicad "memory" problem.

5Excellent product  May 03, 2011
By Jhs "user186355998"
I've been using the Sonicare toothbrushes for years and love them. The hygenist who works on my teeth says they are in great shape in terms of absence of plaque and gum flap length. I just ordered the new 'Essence' version, and it seems to hold a charge longer than the others.
