Can't do without them! Nov 13, 2011
By Robin Lewis

My husband and I had the basic Sonicare toothbrushes and when they finally reach the end of their lifespan (8 years??) we bought the CleanCare models. They are terrific in function and my teeth just do not feel clean if I have to use a regular toothbrush. They hold a charge for 2 weeks and the newer models allow for changing the battery, where the old ones did not. My teeth whiten sooo quickly when I consistently use these!

Quality Issues Feb 10, 2012
By Michelle Albanese I have ordered this product twice. I ordered one twin pack for my husband and myself and later another for our kids. With both purchases one of the toothbrushes came in dead! When I went to charge the toothbrushes one had no flashing light on the front indicating that it was charging. I put it on the charger anyway and the next day it still did not work. I called Phillips and they agreed to send me a new one within 1 to 2 weeks. That was frustrating, but it did come in much quicker than that and the new one did work.
We are really pleased with the toothbrushes. They clean very well and I like having the little beep every thirty seconds to prompt you to move to a new area in the mouth. I have my mouth set up in quadrants now and spend the 30 seconds in each one. Then the toothbrush shuts off after two minutes. I turn it back on and press the on button twice for the gum massage mode and massage all of my gums. I wish I'd had this toothbrush years ago - from childhood, in fact. So, we decided to spend the money and get our two kids their own sonicare toothbrushes. They are 9 and 10 and the kids model of sonicare brush is only recommended to age 10, so I decided to purchase this same model for them. Same thing- only one of them works! I had to call Phillips again and have another one sent out.
When they send you a new one, they give you a label and ask that you return the defective one to them via a Fed-X drop-box or retailer. I had that box riding around in my car for over a week before I had time. I asked this time if I could keep the brush head that came it because he said to mail the handle back and he said "yes," I could keep the brush. So at least I get an extra replacement head.
Bottom Line: The actual toothbrush I would give 5 stars. Phillips quality control I would give 1 star.

So Far, So Good! Dec 30, 2011
By Jeannie I bought this on the recommendation of my dentist's office. It does everything claimed. My teeth feel much cleaner than with manual brushing. I keep one at home for daily use and the other one in my luggage. I used the one in my luggage on a recent week long trip. I charged it when I first received it about three weeks before the trip. I tried to recharge it just before the trip but it indicated that it was already fully charged. I used it the entire trip without keeping it in the charging stand (no room) and it held its charge fine the entire time. I put it in the charger when I got home and it needed only three or four hours to charge instead of the full 24 hours it needed when I first got it.
The design is interesting. The handle that contains the battery is completely sealed. There are no contacts for charging and no mechanical connection to the brush head. Apparently, the battery charges by induction and the brush head is also operated by induction. Since I am the only user, I don't bother to remove the brush after each use. I'm careful to keep the brush horizontal while brushing so the only cleaning really needed is to rinse it with hot water after each use. I turn the brush on while rinsing and leave it on for a few seconds afterwards to fling off the remaining water. This has kept it clean with pretty much no extra effort.
The only complaint I have is the charger base has a provision inside the bottom to wind up the extra cord. It is far too small to be of much use when traveling. It is a bit too small to contain all the extra cord when using it had home. This wasn't enough of a problem to dock a star, though.
Based on a comment I saw here, it will be interesting to see if the battery is still usable a year or so from now.

Comparing SonicCare versions Mar 20, 2012
By Kodiak Biker The HX5853 is an older model with the larger, somewhat more expensive brush heads. We had this version 12 years ago and it worked well, but replacement brushes had become more costly than the newer type (and not as convenient to change each time). We have had the newer version for 5 years, but the handle finally died this week. Will purchase this brand again, but in the new slimmer style, not this older version. Planning to buy this one: Philips Sonicare HX6972/10 FlexCare Plus Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

does what it says Feb 12, 2012
By K & A Really like this product. You can actually feel the surface of your teeth getting cleaner. Makes getting a good cleaning along the back of your last molars a breeze. Will freak you out at first, but you quickly adapt.
