Use with caution and heed the advice! Not just for men... Dec 23, 2011
By Jeri Zerr
"road warrior of the nth degree"
HydroxyStim claims to boost Thermogenesis (internal heat), Energy, Focus and Intensity (of workouts?). First a word of caution - due to the ingredients use caution when beginning to use this product and heed all cautionary advice, particularly heart patients and anyone with a possible depletion of electrolytes. If you are subject to testing for any reason note this product contains geranium extract which may result in a positive test for amphetamine or methylhexanamine (WADA 2010 prohibited list).
~~~~~ From the label:
WARNING: Do not exceed recommended dosage.
Serving Size: 1 capsule Servings per container: 100
Geranium extract 177 mg (germanium robertianum) Caffeine anhydrous 100 mg (about a cup of coffee) Deanol bitartrate 17 mg (supplies DMAE) Yohimbe Extract 40 mg (pausinystalia yohimbe - this is the good quality source!) supplying yohimbine supplying rauwolscine Huperzine extract 13 mcg (Huperzia serrata)
Directions: To assess your tolerance of this potent formula, take 1 capsule once daily for the first 2 days. On days three and four, take 2 capsules once daily. On day five and beyond, take 3 capsules once daily. Take before your workout. Drink 8 - 10 glasses of water daily for general good health. Read the entire label before use. This product contains geranium and should not be used by those concerned with athletic testing such as required by WADA.
~~~~~
Geranium Extract is known for accelerating fat loss, as well as memory and energy enhancement. Potentially it can help you remember to do your workouts and have more energy to complete them once started. However, see the cautionary note above if you are tested for performance enhancing "drugs".
Caffeine is a stimulant and a diuretic - so use with caution during high intensity workouts where electrolyte depletion may be a contraindication. Heart patients also take particular note and reference Dr. Stephen Sinatra's protocols The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology.
Deanol bitartrate may help with nerve conduction, improving overall feeling of wellness, mental clarity, energy, oxygen use (perhaps making the red blood cells more efficient?) and muscle reflexes (likely due to the improved nerve conduction).
Yohimbe extract is this product is used probably for it's known qualities of providing energy and stamina. Yohimbe has long been used to naturally treat erectile dysfunction and is also known as an aphrodisiac and increasing the woman's libido. If several people in your gym are taking this supplement - watch out! ;-)
Huperzine is being researched for its neuro-protective qualities including potentially to help prevent Alzheimer's disease. Huperzine also inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (you will want to research acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to determine the suitability of this supplement particularly if taking medications such as diuretics or for high blood pressure.)
NOTE: HydroxyStim capsules have the appearance of bumble bees - bright yellow and deep black - perhaps as a visual these capsules can sting. The deep color has a source - artificial food colors. SHAME on Muscletech! Other ingredients include: gelatin, titanium dioxide, FD&C Red 40, FD&C Blue 1 (research on FDA...), FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Yellow 6, micro-crystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silica.
ALL of the ingredients in HydroxyStim are known for possible side effects (I'm reasonably healthy yet I began this supplement in small fractional doses with close monitoring for potential side effects). Always research the ingredients in supplements you are considering and discuss the suitability with your health professional.
The three stars stems from the fact there are other pharmaceutical grade ingredients (magnesium, l-carnitine, d-ribose, co-Q10, ginger, capsaicin to name but a few) for creating a supplement to boost energy, endurance and thermogenesis without as much potential for risky side-effects.

Thermogenesis in theory and Practice Jan 01, 2012
By Fritz R. Ward
"dayhiker"
People have wanted fitness (or at the very least weight loss, not always the same as fitness) in a pill for years. One of the more promising options has been to use thermogenesis. The theory behind this is that, as the body's temperature is raised, ever so slightly, one burns more calories and gets more benefits from a workout. In practice, however, pills that try to offer thermogenesis generally contain a lot of stimulants. There are upsides and downsides to this approach.
On the positive side, if you can find an effective way to raise your metabolism, ever so slightly, you will gain some benefit. In the past, I have personally used pills that promote a metabolism raise and found some slight additional benefit to my diet and weight loss regime. On the downside, none of those benefits ever stayed with me for the long term, perhaps because I was not disciplined enough to keep taking the pills and stick to the routine. In the last year and a half, I have lost 80 pounds, without pills, doing it the old fashioned way: diet and exercise.
On the downside, almost all pills like this include caffeine. Hydroxystim has 100mg per pill! The directions suggest you eventually take up to 3 pills a day. Now, if you are already drinking coffee or sodas (diet or regular) you will be subjecting your body to a lot more than it can handle. If you have heart problems, and I personally have atriel fibulations, you really should avoid this kind of dosing.
Bottom line: pills like Hydroxystim (and I did try a few) can give you some limited additional benefit in an exercise and diet regimen. But they cannot replace diet and exercise, and for some people, the risks will outweigh the benefits. I have decided that I am in that category. So listen to your body and use with caution.

May work for you, or it may not. Dec 15, 2011
By Kort

There are a lot of factors that determine whether something like a workout stimulant will be effective, body chemistry and how much you've used such products in the past being major contributors. I am in a biggest loser contest at work and tried the 18 capsule size from a local vendor to see if it was worth getting the larger 100 count.
For me, it wasn't. I did notice an mild increase in thermogenic action (increased body heat) and slight increase in energy levels, but not much else. Focus and workout intensity remained the same and I can't say that I lost any weight by burning more calories. It gave me a unpleasant fluttery feeling too, even though the amount of caffeine in Hydroxystim isn't that high. My sleep patterns were adversely effected as well. It looks like Muscletech is promoting this product with a name similar to the widely advertised Hydroxycut (and Hydroxyslim). Don't buy into any hype though. My suggestion is to try the smaller size for yourself and if you like the results, then move on to the 100 capsule size.

Top in its field of stimulants/thermogenics Feb 07, 2012
By D. A. Ross I'm always a little hesitant giving any product a 5-star rating, as it can seem a little suspicious or suspect, but I was hard-pressed to find anything negative to write about Hydroxystim by Muscletech. Having sampled many different thermogenic products (ie. heat inducing/metabolism boosting) on the market, such as BPI Sports - Roxylean, 60 capsules, Fastin-XR, USPLabs Oxyelite Pro 90 Caps Oxy Elite Pro Super Thermogenic + Detoxufree72 and Force Factor Ramp Up Thermogenic Energy Maximizer, I was curious as to what Hydroxystim could bring to the table. Muscletech is a company I have really come to trust and appreciate, ever since I began using both MuscleTech NanoStim -- 20 Caplets and Muscletech Neurocore, Fruit Punch, .42 lbs (189 Grams) (the latter of which I also reviewed).
After several days of using Hydroxystim, here are my notes:
* No jitters, shakes or "empty" feeling. With a lot of other caffeine laden stimulants out there (especially Ramp Up), I end up with jitters and a subsequent crash. I experienced none of this on Hydroxystim, which could be due to the right proprietary blend of ingredients working in harmony.
* Great energy boost. The one-two punch of yohimbe and caffeine makes for an awesome energy combo. One capsule was enough to get me through my workouts and my day, though two really lit things up for me. Woah!
* Cost efficient. OxyELITE Pro and Force Factor Ramp Up, though good products, are certainly on the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and offer nothing more in the way of effectiveness. Hydroxystim seems a much better value.
* Trimming the fat. I don't have a lot of fat to lose, but HydroxyStim will definitely help shed those extra few pounds around the midsection and glutes, thanks to the excellent source of yohimbe extract, which is generally marketed primarily as a stimulant.
* Laser-like concentration. I was super focused when the Hydroxystim kicked in. It was almost scary, as I felt hyperaware of everything around me, like a superhero!
* No fillers or unnecessary ingredients. Just the right blend of all-natural, useful ingredients, so you're not paying for junk.
And what are those ingredients?
*Geranium extract (as Germanium robertianum) (aerial parts) 177mg *Caffeine anhydrous 100mg *Deanol bitartrate (supplying DMAE) 17 mg *Yohimbe Extract (as Pausinystalia yohimbe) (bark) 40 mg Supplying yohimbine Supplying rauwolscine *Huperzine extract (as Huperzia serrata) (aerial parts) 13 mcg
Other Ingredients: GELATIN CAPSULE (GELATIN, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, FD&C RED NO. 40, FD&C BLUE NO. 1, FD&C YELLOW NO. 5, FD&C YELLOW NO. 6), MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, SILICA
As with most thermogenics/stimulants out there, you want to start with just one capsule to determine your tolerance. Huperzine can cause some nausea, and caffeine can, of course, cause over stimulation in some - especially in conjunction with yohimbe. So, take these with precaution.
Bottom line? Hydroxystim seems to be an excellent product at a great price, comprised of good-quality, all-natural ingredients, and will likely give you the focus, energy and thermo burn needed to shed fat, boost metabolism and feel great!

On the fence.... Jan 24, 2012
By A. Crafton I've used this for almost a month now, and shared it with my teenage workout fiend to see if our results were comparable. They weren't. It gets 3 stars because one of us did get results from it.
Ten years or so ago, when Hydroxycut (is that the one?) had ephedra in it, that's what I used instead of soda or coffee to get my rear in gear. It kept me going and helped me make it through long nights at work. Along with diet, exercise, and divorce, I lost over 30 pounds. I stopped using it before they forced the manufacturer to sell it without putting ephedra in it. I tried it a few years later but without the ephedra, it was a waste of money for me. Me likey ephedra! That's probably why not much else excites my metabolism now.
My routine is mostly cardio, and I didn't notice any increase in my ability to stay on the treadmill longer or harder. I never looked at the mileage counter and said, "Wow I could trot my behind another 5 miles!" It was still the same workout for me. Now, I did notice a thermogenic effect before the workouts, like I was having vague hot flashes. The first time it happened I had forgotten that I took the Hydroxystim and started to freak out that I was hitting menopause suddenly. I also noticed that it caused me to be awake for hours, restless and with my eyes zooming around in my head as I tried to sleep, when I took it within two hours of bedtime. But I have a hard time sleeping anyway so your mileage may vary. It does have caffeine and if you are the least bit sensitive to stimulants, don't dismiss that.
My 18 year old weight-lifting teen said that he did notice a boost from this product. I did not tell him what it was when I offered it to him, only that it was a workout supplement. I didn't want him to have a predetermined opinion of the product. I told him to take one before a workout, which he did. He does weight lifting and hits the cardio; he said when he was on the treadmill (he is young, he runs, his knees aren't shot yet) that he ran farther than he normally does and that he worked up a much greater sweat during all of his workouts. Of course he can eat the side of a barn twice a day and not gain an ounce, so he's probably metabolically wired to burn calories at a nuclear rate anyway. He does drink coffee, so he's used to high levels of caffeine in his system.
My teen liked the product and said he would buy it. Me, I prefer not to have hot flashes and sweats unless I'm actually exerting myself.
