This brand is OK - but there is a better one Jun 21, 2006
By calvinnme In case you don't know what gymnema sylvestre is, it is useful to diabetics and prediabetics in helping stabilize their blood sugar. It does this by making the insulin you produce more effective and also by absorbing the sugar in the food that you do ingest. Some sources claim that it has the power to regenerate beta cells in the pancreas itself, but I find this claim dubious.
I tried this brand of gymnema sylvestre first, and found it to hit a little to hard, in that the sugar low I got later in the day was just a little too low. A much better product is Informulab's Beta Fast GXR Glucose Balance. The dosage is one tablet twice daily with best results achieved when taken with breakfast and dinner. Each pill is 400 mg gymnema sylvestre leaf just like this product except it is time released.
I was getting hypoglycemia a few hours after I ate the largest meal of the day, which for me was lunch. I began taking half a 400 mg pill with lunch daily and over time saw a real improvement in my condition. I am not a diabetic - yet - so if you are diabetic you should probably talk to your doctor before using it.

Works well for me.. Dec 23, 2006
By Long Island, East, member Gymnema Syl, I needed it, a something to help bring my sugar levels into a reliable regulated range. Metaformin, one of my prescriptions, was not quite covering as a blood sugar regulator. ( my nominal illness, besides diabetes II, cycles in immunity issues causing spikes that I could not control.) Gymnema and a few other supplements have helped. As for how well it acts alone, I can't tell you. I was asked by my Doctor to take it with Zinc, Chromium (not the picolinate version--there's a lot of controversary as to the safety of chromium picolinate--even to the point of causing some serious diseases!) and also I was asked to take a well rounded multi-vitamin, plus a strong B-vitamin. It is this product, with the other supplements, that is reducing the frequency and height of my sugar spikes. I have not experienced any low-blood sugar readings while on this product. But I was advised to be careful if I wanted to add any further supplements. (like Banaba Leaf--corosolic acid, because it might offset the effectiveness of my prescriptions. I was also warned that there are many alternative medicines that do help, but that not all will marry well with all prescriptions.) PLEASE CHECK this out with your doctor, a reliable pharmacist, or some other alike profession equipped with a background on alternative meds. (I did try Banaba leaf--corosolic acid prior to my doctors words of wisdom. I hadn't a clue how much to take, or if what was suggested to take would be enough. The online reviews and research talked about 8-mg of corosolic acid---it just isn't clear to me just how much of that is in any of the Banaba Leaf supplements. So for what I was taking, the manufacturer's recommendation--I experiences raised daily-sugar-levels that lasted longer that the concerns of my spikes. But, everybody's chemistry is a bit different.)
Swanson, the manufacturer, is one of three online sources that I regularly visit for vitamins and supplements. It's hard for me to locally get supplements that are not heavily mixed with red and yellow dyes, or shallacked with a thick coat of something that usually causes all sorts of nasty digestive problems--for me. Swanson tends to go down easy and work as expected.
TIP: There is evidence of Gymnema Sylvestre reducing irregular blood sugar levels "if taken with meds," and also of helping to reduce cholesterol. Visit www.nih.gov and plug Gymnema Sylvestre into their search engine for direct links to research issues. In fact, if you ever need info on alternative medicines, check out the NIH, National Institute of Health. They're not selling something, and they are a government watchdog with a trustworthy track record. And, always, Feel better.

Does what it is supposed to. May 07, 2011
By Marcin Orszulak For anyone looking to control their blood sugar or chocolate cravings this is a godsend. If you pop open one of the capsules and chew it, that chocolate bar won't taste so wonderful anymore.
I've tested my blood sugar before and after using this product multiple times and it definitely lowers it SUBSTANTIALLY.

Works with dry hair! Jun 15, 2011
By Amber I bought this product to help with my sugar cravings, but it left an awful taste in my mouth. A side effect of this product when taken every day was that my super dry hair went to super oily. I've since stopped taking it for sugar cravings and now take one pill a week for normal hair--no longer super dry! This is a great side effect.

Does Seem to Work Jun 11, 2009
By S. Fine I definitely noticed a difference in blood sugar when using this item. I take metformin twice a day, so mid day I used the Gymnema Sylvestre, taking to capsules with lunch. There were no side effects, but like most herbal supplements there is a distinct smell that can be tasted briefly. They worked so well for me that I gave some to my daughter, who is having a very hard time keeping her own sugar in check. The results were amazing! I would still recommend that they be used only as a supplement, and not as a treatment.
